We use sunscreens to protect us from sunlight, but is your sunscreen safe to use? Are you sure that it is not causing any problems? Maybe you are pretty sure that your sunscreen is perfect, but you could be wrong. You will be amazed to know the alarming data given by Environment Working Group (EWG). Believe it or not, only 25% of sunscreens can protect us from the dangerous UVA and UVB rays! You must be frightened. Today, we are very concerned about using sunscreen, but not concerned about using proper sunscreen which is really bad. Below are some important factors that you must know if you use sunscreen. Remember them so that you could get the best product next time.
Your Sunscreen Could Have Retinol or Vitamin A: Lots of sunscreens do have retinol or vitamin A which is very dangerous. It could create tumors! Don’t expose your skin to sunlight up to one week if your sunscreen contains retinol or vitamin A.
Think about SPF: SPF is a very common term for sunscreen users. As a sunscreen user, you should know that you can get rid of UVB ray, but not UVA ray. Many manufactures exploit the term SPF. They manufacture products with high SPF and sell them claiming that they are good for your skin which is not right. If you stay outside knowing that your sunscreen with high SPF can protect you from dangerous sunlight, then you are wrong. Sunscreens can’t defend UVA ray well. So, any sunscreens with SPF higher than 50 should be avoided.
Don’t Overlook Oxybenzone: This is another chemical that you should give a lot of attention to. It could get mixed with your blood and can cause reproductive problems, thyroid problems, etc. You see, how devastating it could be. I bet you never thought that your sunscreen could damage your reproductive system. Unfortunately, more than 50% of sunscreens have this dangerous chemical. So, always read labels before you buy any sunscreens. Also, avoid benzophenone or benzophenone-3; they are all the same.
Avoid Sunscreens in the Form of Spray, Powder, or Towelette: If any chemicals act like hormones, and you could inhale it, then they should be avoided. Another disadvantage is that you may not get adequate amount if your sunscreen is in the form of powder, spray, or towelette. You will be happy to know that after 2013, there will be no sunscreens in the form of powder or towelette.
But what is the solution? Obviously, there are some good sunscreens available in the market. According to EWG, Beach & Sport Sunscreens, Moisturizers with SPF, Lip Balms with SPF, and Makeup with SPF are better than other so-called sunscreens. The most important thing you must know before using any sunscreens is that sunscreens are not the first choice to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays, according to EWG, WHO, and American Academy of Dermatology. First of all, you must avoid scorching sunlight emitted from 10 am to 4 pm. Then you should cover your body well wearing hats, long pants, long sleeves, etc. Then comes the sunscreen; use a proper sunscreen. Have a nice, glowing skin. Good luck!
